As a Dutch stichting, iSHARE Foundation cannot distribute profit — there are no shareholders. So the fee model is simple: fees first cover the five base-cost pillars above. Any revenue above that base is spent entirely on marketing, promotion and adoption — activities whose direct beneficiaries are the commercial service providers issuing iSHARE credentials.

Als Nederlandse stichting kan iSHARE Foundation geen winst uitkeren — er zijn geen aandeelhouders. Het tariefmodel is daarom simpel: tarieven dekken eerst de vijf basiskosten hierboven. iSHARE did not invent this funding model. It is the standard way neutral trust infrastructure is financed worldwide: a non-profit scheme owner, cost-recovery fees paid by the parties who earn revenue on top of the scheme, and full transparency on where the money goes.

iSHARE heeft dit financieringsmodel niet uitgevonden. GLEIF — the closest parallel

GLEIF — de beste parallel

The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation is a Swiss non-profit that governs the LEI system. It does not issue LEIs itself — it accredits ~40 commercial LEI issuers and charges them a small per-LEI fee. Its budget goes to exactly the same categories as iSHARE's: standards governance, accreditation and oversight of issuers, legal framework, international harmonisation (ISO 17442, regulatory recognition) and promotion of LEI adoption. As volume grew, GLEIF repeatedly lowered its per-LEI fee — from $20 in 2014 to $11 today — the surplus of scale went back to the ecosystem. And with its verifiable-LEI (vLEI) programme, GLEIF now applies the same model to credentials: it qualifies and audits issuers but deliberately leaves credential pricing to the market, "to encourage competition" — exactly the role iSHARE plays for data-sharing credentials.

Base costs are largely fixed. As the ecosystem scales, the same logic that let GLEIF cut its per-LEI fee repeatedly applies here: growing volume means lower fees, more promotion, or both — decided with members.

iSHARE Foundation also takes part in subsidised projects, such as EU programmes. Those have their own budgets and their own accounting. To keep the fee model verifiable, the annual report presents the two strictly separately: membership fees never subsidise project work, and project funding never masks the true base cost of the scheme. This is the same discipline that makes GLEIF's audited annual report the anchor of its credibility.

iSHARE Foundation neemt ook deel aan gesubsidieerde projecten, zoals EU-programma's. Die hebben hun eigen budgetten en hun eigen verantwoording. Two guarantees follow from this split: your fees never fund project work — and project money never artificially lowers (or hides) the base cost you see here. What the scheme really costs stays visible, every year.
